Board Design Checklist

  • Filenames example TurtleBoard v1.3.
    • Turtle Board is the name
    • 1 is a major revision
    • 3 is a minor revision.
  • Schematic Design Rule Check
    • Stick with 0.1" grid
    • Add two fiducials when applicable
    • Large boards should have standoffs (4 min)
  • PCB Design Rule Check
    • Stick with the 0.05" grid, you may not violate this rule
    • Make sure check for unrouted nets
      • turn on only the unrouted layer
    • Trace Widths
      • 6 mil min
      • 8 mil okay
      • 10 mil preferred
    • Trace Clearance
      • 8 mil preferred
    • Pour Clearance
      • 12 mil preferred
    • Vias
      • 15 mil minimum
      • 20 mil preferred
    • Power/Ground net widths
      • 12 mil - 100mA
      • 16 mil - 500mA
  • Generate a PDF of the schematic
  • Generate Assembly drawings
  • Add the border
  • PCB DOCUMENTATION
  • Make sure every board has the Logo or site URL
  • Silkscreen appropriately
    • Label LEDs and their purpose PWR, ON, etc
    • Label Connectors; battery, audio, servo, etc
      • Also label pins if applicable, example TXD, RXD, VCC, GND
    • Label switches and their state, ON, Mode 1, Mode 2, etc
    • The smallest text you can use is ??mil
  • Stand Offs
    • Drill: 0.12598425

Manufacturing Checklist

  • All PCBS must be black unless you have a good reason
  • Load the seven files with Viewplot. Be sure to specify the drill file type as 2.4 leading.
    • Top and bottom copper (.GTL, .GBL)
    • Top and bottom solder mask (.GTS, .GBS)
    • Top and bottom silkscreen (.GTO, .GBO)
    • Drill file, 2.4 leading (.TXT)
  • Be sure to specify the drill file type as 2.4 leading.
